Recently India Today conducted a survey and awarded various state tourism department across the country in different categories. Categories included Heritage and culture, beaches and coastal destination, adventure destination, wildlife destination, mountain destination, Luxury and emerging destination.

  • Category- Heritage and culture

Kamakhya temple from Assam achieves the top position. Kamakhya temple is dedicated to the mother goddess Kamakhaya. It is situated on the Nilachal hill in a western part of Guwahati city in Assam. It is a prominent place for religious tourist. The other places to visit in Assam are Kaziranga national park, Purva Tirupati Sri Balaji temple, Agnigarh hill and more. Most prominent festival of Assam is Bihu and their famous traditional dance form is Ankia Naat etc.

  • Category- Beaches and coastal destination(Winner)

Mandrem beach in north Goa, situated 21 km from Panaji, won the top laurels in this category. Goa has main two beaches namely “Junas” and “Ashvem”. Mandrem beach is one of the best tourist destinations in India. The other places to visit in Goa are Palolem beach, Panaji, Baga beach and much more. The Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. (GTDC) executes tourism commercial activities. These include sightseeing tours and river cruises. Their famous traditional dance forms are Dekhnni, Mando, Fugdi etc.

  • Category- Beaches and coastal destination (1st Runner up)

The first runner up winner in this category goes to the Gopalpur sea beach. It is one of the famous sea beaches in Odisha located 15 km away from Berhampur. One can do many adventurous activities like scuba diving, paddle boat, water scooter. Gopalpur beach is referred to as one of the best tourist destinations in India. The other places to visit in Odisha are Chilika Lake, Konark sun temple, Jagannath temple and many more outstanding places. The most prominent festivals in Odisha are Durga Puja, Deepawali etc and their famous traditional dance forms are Odissi, Mahari etc.

  • Category – Best emerging destination.

Arunachal Pradesh wins the top position in this category. Arunachal Pradesh is called the land of the rising sun and shares the 1930 km of the international boundary with four different countries namely China, Bhutan, Tibet & Burma. The panoramic view of the splendorous landscape and breathtaking natural beauty of evergreen rain forest is a must watch! Due to the above-mentioned reasons, Arunachal Pradesh ranks as one of the best tourist destinations in India. The places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh are Namdapha national park, Zemithang, Tawang, Soani Rupai wildlife sanctuary, Ziro and much more. The most prominent festival in Arunachal Pradesh is Mopin, Dree, Ziro music festival etc. The famous traditional dance forms are Roppi, Hurkani, Chalo etc.

Overall India Today has taken a very good initiative by which the various state tourism departments make a sincere effort to enhance the number of their visitors. This enables them to participate in such prestigious events and wins laurels for their state.

  3. I’m definitely bookmarking this. I’ve not been to India get, but I’m going for the first time in March and finding it super difficult to decided where to go! Kamakhya temple is going to be a must for me!

  4. Beach is not typically something that comes to mind when I think of India. I definitely imagine a lot of culture, history, traditions and temples but not beaches. Buttt! Now that I know .. I want to do some more research on it!

  6. It’s great that India is starting to make an effort to enhance tourism. I have always been fascinated by India and this post has me wanting to explore India’s beaches. I love the photos of those colorful huts/bungalows at Mandrem beach in Goa. What an awesome vacation it would be to stay in one of those and wake up to the sounds of the ocean 🙂
